Hello my lovely Angel Voices…
Recently we saw the return of my wonderful women's choir, Cathy's Angels, which was established on the 13th of October 2017.
How did Cathy's Angels start?...
I remember being so excited to be asked to start a new women's choir in Welshpool. I'd never thought about being a Musical Director. I had only ever thought about being a vocal coach, being an MD has opened my eyes and ears. I was obviously meant to learn over these last four years, that vocal coaching and musical direction go hand in hand.
We started life in the town hall in Welshpool on a Saturday, and the first song that we learned was “To make you feel my love”. I didn't know where to get the sheet music for the choirs, and I remember blagging my way through that first session, and I was incredibly nervous. I had decided to write the harmonies myself to the song and teach it by ear, not really a great plan, but it was a two part harmony and to be honest we still do that song today, its become our anthem, there's just something so beautiful about the way the women sing this song together, I feel their connection vocally, it's like magic.
To be fair, I am blessed to live in an area where singing is important. Everyone in and around Welshpool appear to love singing. The karaoke at the Wellington has always been packed and everyone sings "Blanket on the ground" and "Country Roads" by standing on top of all the chairs or on the tables. And they love to sing any Tom Jones (we all love Tom Jones), and they admire the local artists such as Di Rob's and John Hughes and the bands like Frozen Cabin and I personally have felt the love and respect of my lovely Welshpool people as a vocalist.
So, the fact that I didn't actually think that I could run a choir successfully in Welshpool now seems a bit strange to me. It's one of the highlights of my week.
I always said that it would take five to seven years to get a choir truly established and I feel that is true, as my choir is expanding in numbers every week, becoming a group of empowered female singers.
In the beginning, I went to lots of business networking events to inspire local women to sing. I talked about it at parties, on the street, all over my social media. And slowly but surely one by one my choir of ladies has grown. It's been a great journey, walked with some of the most beautiful women I've ever had the privilege to be beside.
There have been many women that have come and gone over the last four years, but they are definitely a part of the history that has helped to create the success of this beautiful women's choir.
What are the benefits?...
There's no greater sound, I don't think, than hearing anybody sing with joy and passion, even if it's out of tune, there is something beautiful about it. Groups of people singing together has a feeling that lifts you out of the soles of your feet. That is the truest and most profound benefit of singing in any group.
When we are challenged we sing… Yes! Yes! Yes!
Through the restrictions of the pandemic the group grew, actually grew, I put this down to the need to connect and when physical connections are not allowed the voice can reach out and touch our hearts and our minds.
Technology has a massive part to play in allowing us to share our own trials of separation from loved ones… zoom was our life saver, pre recordings gave us something to listen to beside propaganda and joyless news of the end of the world proportions. Their joy of singing just shone.
One of the main things I hear all the time is "I can't sing" I can tell you though, everyone can sing, its your right and your privilege and no one should be able to stop you ever. I'm quite protective of that truth.
Singing as a group says "We're all in this together" and that shows, especially when they start getting the harmonies right because it's fun, it's light-hearted, as well as a good workout. But mostly it's enlightening, funny, exhilarating, and exciting. My women's choir grew by 50% through the time of the pandemic, and my vision of 100 Welsh ladies of Welshpool singing are starting to become true and I really know it is and always will be, a true celebration of women.
These ladies have inspired me to work hard. They've made me want to be a better musical director and a better vocal coach.
Boy'ztrous Rock...
Now I am ready for what I think will be the ultimate challenge for me……
A men's choir which hopefully will start on the 14th of October 2021 and at the moment, I've decided to call it Boy’ztrous Rock Choir, which is boys then strous. So, it's a bit boisterous. I want it to have energy, and it will!!
But if my women's choir is anything to go by, I'm in for more laughter and joy in the art of community singing. So come and join us if you can or join a choir near you. You will never regret sharing your voice with others in unison
Thank you for reading, many blessings to you all.
Cathy Beech.
